FSSAI amends the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011; Notifies standards for Drinking Water (Purified)

In a Notification dated 29th January, 2019, the  Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has issued the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2019 (“Amendment Regulations”) to further amend the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 (“Principal Regulations”).The Amendment Regulations are effective immediately.

Key Highlights of the Amendment

In the Principal Regulations, in Regulation 2.10 pertaining to BEVERAGES, (Other than Dairy and Fruits & Vegetables based), after sub-regulation 2.10.8 which defines Packaged drinking water (other than Mineral water), a new sub-regulation 2.10.9 has been inserted by the Amendment Regulations which states:

2.10.9 Drinking Water (Purified) –

(1) Means water, other than packaged drinking water and natural mineral water which is offered or sold through water vending machine.

(2) Drinking water (purified) must be clear without any sediments, suspended particles and extraneous matter which must also comply with the requirements of Indian Standards, IS:10500.

Explanation

It has further been clarified by the FSSAI that for the purposes of this sub-regulation, “water vending machine” means decentralised water purification systems that purify and dispense waters and does not include installation intended for use of water for captive consumption.
