Labour Department of Telangana exempts commercial establishments from certain daily and weekly working hour restrictions under Ease of Doing Business reforms

Labour, Employment, Training & Factories Department, Government of Telangana has issued an order under the Telangana Shops and Establishments Act, 1988 (“Act”) to promote Ease of Doing Business reforms. It has exempted all Commercial Establishments (excluding shops) from the provisions governing limits on daily and weekly working hours and mandatory intervals for rest. The exemption allows such establishments to permit employees to work up to 10 hours daily, subject to a weekly limit of 48 hours.

Key Highlights:

Relaxation of Working Hour Restrictions for Commercial Establishments:

  1. Daily working hours for any employee shall not exceed 10 hours and total weekly working hours shall not exceed 48 hours.
  2. Work beyond 48 hours per week must be compensated with overtime wages.
  3. Employees must not work for more than six continuous hours without a rest break of at least 30 minutes.
  4. The total spread-over of work, including the rest interval, shall not exceed 12 hours on any given day.
  5. Additional work beyond 48 hours per week is allowed on payment of overtime wages, subject to a maximum of 144 hours in any quarter.
  6. Violation of any of these conditions may result in revocation of the exemption without prior notice.
