SEBI intensifies its efforts to combat online investment scams and calls for greater collaboration from social media platforms

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (“SEBI”) has issued a press release regarding intensification of its efforts to combat online investment scams and calling for greater collaboration from social media platforms. SEBI has urged major social media platforms and internet search engine providers to implement robust mechanisms to prevent the misuse of their platforms for fraudulent activities.
This is done to ensure that only SEBI-registered entities can advertise investment products and services, through implementation of a mandatory verification process. This initiative aligns with the global call to action by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (“IOSCO”).
