Power Ministry issues Draft National Electricity Policy, 2026 inviting comments/suggestions within 19th February 2026

The Ministry of Power (“MoP”) has issued the Draft National Electricity Policy, 2026 (“Draft Policy”) inviting comments/suggestions. The Draft Policy proposes reliable, affordable, and quality power, make the electricity sector financially viable and competitive, boost clean energy and storage, and strengthen planning, markets, and grids.

The comments/suggestions must be sent in word-format to rr1-mop@gov.in within 19th February 2026 i.e., 30 days from the date of issuance.  

Key Proposals:

  1. The Draft Policy seeks to ensure adequate power availability with reliable, high-quality supply, addressing both peak demand and overall energy requirements.
  1. The Draft Policy promotes the expansion of renewable energy, supported by energy storage and flexible generation, while encouraging market-based procurement over long-term tie-ups, and supports the adoption of advanced and cleaner technologies, including nuclear and storage solutions.
  1. The Draft Policy highlights the importance of grid reliability, transmission infrastructure, and the integration of renewable energy into the system.
  1. The Draft Policy aligns generation planning with India’s climate commitments, while aiming to strengthen long-term energy security.
  1. The Draft Policy aims to ensure reliable 24*7 electricity supply by improving power quality and reducing outages through enhanced grid management and reduced losses.
  1. The Draft Policy emphasizes transparent, cost-reflective tariffs and greater accountability of distribution companies, seeking to minimize hidden subsidies while improving service delivery.
  1. The Draft Policy promotes consumer choice and competition through open access to multiple suppliers, accompanied by strengthened grievance redressal and consumer protection mechanisms.
