Central Government retains the Wage Ceiling of Rs. 15,000 per month for the purpose of EPF contribution

The Central Government has notified Rs. 15,000 per month as the wage ceiling for the purposes of determining the eligibility for membership under Chapter III [Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) related provisions] of the Code on Social Security, 2020 (please refer to the attached gazette notification).
In this regard, please further note that, the Supreme Court, in its Order dated 5th January, 2026 in a PIL, had observed that that the following issues warranted active consideration by the Union of India in a period of 4 months:
- Revision of the existing wage ceiling of Rs.15,000, which has remained unchanged since 2014, in accordance with the recommendations made by the Sub Committee on Enhancing Coverage and Managing Related Litigation, as approved by the Central Board of Trustees of EPFO in July 2022;
- Formulation and implementation of a dynamic formula or objective criteria for future revisions of the wage ceiling under the EPF Scheme;
- Formulation of a mandatory mechanism for annual periodic revision of the wage ceiling under Paragraph 2(f) of the employees Provident Scheme, 1952, in line with relevant economic indicators such as minimum wages, inflation, Consumer Price Index, Income Tax exemption thresholds, and per capita Net National Income;
However, pursuant to the present notification dated 29th May, 2026 (as attached to this mail), no change has been made in the wage ceiling for EPF which continues to remain Rs 15000 per month.
