Environment Ministry amends the Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986 related to effluent standards for ‘Man-made Fibre Industry’

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (“MoEFCC”) has issued Environment (Protection) Amendment Rules, 2024 (“Amendment Rules”). The Amendment Rules seeks to amend Schedule I of the Environment (Protection) Rules 1986 (“Rules”) which deals with Standards for emission or discharge of environmental pollutants.

Previously, Schedule I of the Rules in serial number 2, under heading ‘Environment Standards for Man-made Fibre Industry’ under sub-heading ‘A. Effluent Standards’ in ‘Note’ stated that “The recovery of Sodium Sulphate shall not be less than 60% in Viscose Staple Fibre and Viscose Filament Yarn units”.  The Amendment Rules now inserts “except production from continuous spun yarn technology” at the end of the said ‘Note’.
