Licenses required to operate a Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) in India

Planning to set up a restaurant? Starting a restaurant in India can be an overwhelming process with number of licenses required.
This blog will help you navigate through some of the key licenses requirement you as an operator needs to meet for opening a restaurant. Knowing and being on the right side of the law helps makes the process a cakewalk.
FSSAI License

Online application can be made on https://foscos.fssai.gov.in/

Registration on the online portal has to be made for procuring license.

Application should be submitted with requisite documents as per the requirements specified by the licensing authority.

License is issued from varying validity ranging from 1 year to 5 years.
Shops and Establishment License

Register QSR within 30 days of commencement of business.

Display of the registration certificate in QSR premises is mandatory.
Eating House License

Issued by licensing police commissioner of the concerned city where QSR is located.

Application form can be downloaded from the website of the concerned state police commissioner.
Health and Trade License

Application can be made both offline on zonal citizen service bureau and online on state municipal corporation website.

The licenses must be obtained by the QSR prior to the commencement of business License issued tentatively within 60 days of application.
Music License

Obtain music license to play pre-recorded music in QSR from Phonographic Performance Limited.

Public Performance License needs to be obtained from the authority established by the Government of India that is Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) India.

Payment of licensing fee can be made online http://www.pplindia.org/licctg.aspx, http://www.iprs.org/cms/
Fire Safety

Application for NOC from the state fire department before starting construction.

NOC is granted after inspection from the Chief Fire Officer.
Certificate of Environmental Clearance

Certificate of Environmental Clearance should be obtained from the State Pollution Control Board.

Documents can be submitted online on the respective state portals.
Signage License
-
License is to be obtained from local civil authority like municipal corporation.
