Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Rules, 2009 gets amended; introduces implementation of automated continuous monitoring system for fire-fighting system in a building

The Urban Development Department, Maharashtra (“Department”) has notified the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures (Amendment) Rules, 2025 (“Amendment Rules”) to amend the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Rules, 2009 (“Principal Rules”). The Department through the Amendment Rules addresses various aspects like building heights requiring fire safety measures, the appointment of fire safety officers, the implementation of IoT-enabled fire safety mechanisms, and the frequency of fire safety audits. This is effective immediately.

Key Highlights under the Amendment Rules:

1. Introduction of implementation of automated continuous monitoring system for fire-fighting system in a building or part thereof;
2. Now, the fire and life safety measures to be complied in accordance with the National Building Code and Indian Standard Code to get compliance certificate from the licensed agency.
3. Introduction of issuing of a certificate regarding automated continuous monitoring system for the fire-fighting system in building or a part thereof will be issued by the Licensed Agency in the prescribed form.
4. The certificates issued by the Licensed Agency be submitted by owner or occupier in person or sent by registered post or through courier agency or online to Chief Fire Officer or Director.
5. A certificate regarding evaluation of fire prevention and life safety measures will be issued by the Licensed Fire and Life Safety Auditor in the prescribed format.
6. The Amendment Rules has substituted the terms fire service fees, now the fees leviable will be termed as Fire and Emergency Services Fees.
