MoRTH notifies Central Motor Vehicles (Eighth Amendment) Rules, 2022; amends the validity period of a renewed Certificate of Fitness

The Ministry of Transport has notified further amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 (“Rules”). The amended Rules are called Central Motor Vehicles (Eighth Amendment) Rules, 2022, which are effective since 5th April, 2022.
Key Highlights:
1. Now, the validity of a renewed Certificate of Fitness of a transport vehicle shall be as follows:
• Two years: for vehicles up to eight years old.
• One year: for vehicles which are older than eight years.
2. Further, for the renewal of Certificate of Fitness, the same is required to be done mandatorily through a registered Automated Testing Station for recognition, regulation and
control of automated testing station within the following timelines:
• For Heavy Goods Vehicles / Heavy Passenger Motor Vehicles: from 1st April, 2023 onwards; and
• For Medium Goods Vehicles / Medium Passenger Motor Vehicles and Light Motor vehicles (Transport): from 1st June, 2024 onwards.
