Tamil Nadu PCB prohibits manufacturing, importing, stocking, distributing, selling and using of single-use plastic with immediate effect; sets up a control room with respect to Single Use Plastic (SUP)

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board ( “TNPCB”) has prohibited the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of following single use plastic (“SUP”) including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene in Tamil Nadu effective 1st July, 2022:
(a) ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene [Thermocol] for decoration;
(b) plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron, stirrers
For any violations noticed, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board will take appropriate action against the manufacturers of the banned plastic items. The local body concerned will take action against the vendors, commercial establishments, malls, kalyana mandapam, etc for import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of banned plastic items.
In order to facilitate activities related to effective implementation of SUP ban, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has set up a Control Room. (Toll Free Number to contact 1800 425 6750).
The Control Room will operate from 9.30 am – 6.00 pm on all days till July 31st 2022 and will provide assistance, guidance, clarification and information as may be sought by various stakeholders regarding ban on SUP items.
Additionally, the TNPCB has also provided the details of banned items by Government of Tamil Nadu and Ministry of Environment and Forests.
