NPCI issues information on compliance timeline for international acceptance using UPI (UPI Global); All members/PSPs/TPAPs have to enable UPI global latest by 30th September, 2022

The National Payments Corporation of India (“NPCI”) has issued a notification on compliance timeline for international acceptance using UPI (UPI Global).

Background:

NPCI had introduced international merchant payment acceptance through UPI through a previous circular dated 4th September, 2020.  It was further mandated that the ecosystem has to implement this feature by 31st December, 2021 at the issuer and UPI app level .

Following the issuance of the abovementioned circular it has been observed that many members/PSPs/TPAPs have breached the mandated timeline and are yet to implement UPI Global at the issuer and UPI level. In view of the same,  all members/PSPs/TPAPs have to enable UPI global latest by 30th September, 2022.

Now, in this regard, ecosystem participants have to take note of the following-

1. Once enabled for one country by the issuer bank, there should not be any need to do additional clarification or change for any incremental country by all participants in the transaction flow. Even if the QR standards differ for a country, by means of QR translation table at NPCI every incremental QR code can be read by the UPI app without having to change the app or certification
2. Incremental work for additional country will be done by NPCI i.e. certifying and connecting to the country’s or partner’s infrastructure, the rules and regulations including settlement guarantee mechanism
3. Final compliance timeline for all apps, issuers, PSPs should not be later than 30th September, 2022. In case, a member of TPAP fails to comply with the abovementioned timelines, NPCI will take appropriate penal actions.
