Wearing of seat belts mandatory for motor vehicle drivers and passengers while travelling in Mumbai City with effect from 1st November, 2022; penalty to the tune of Rs. 1000/- to be imposed on violators

The Government of Maharashtra has directed all vehicle drivers and commuters travelling on the roads of Mumbai city to mandatorily wear seat belts from 1st November, 2022. Commuters are required to install seat belts in motor vehicles without seat belt facility by 1st November, 2022.
Any person who contravenes the conditions specified above shall be punishable with a fine of Rs. 1000/-.
Background: Section 194 (B) (1) of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 prescribes penalty of Rs. 1000/- for anyone driving a motor vehicle or carrying passengers not wearing seat belts.
