Environment Ministry notifies that brine sludge is no longer a hazardous waste generated from production of caustic soda and chlorine

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (“Environment Ministry”) has notified the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Amendment Rules, 2026 (“Amendment Regulations”) to further amend the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016 (“Principal Rules”).
The Amendment Rules removes the process “Production of caustic soda and chlorine” which generates hazardous waste as “Brine Sludge” from Schedule I of the Principal Rules which is the list of hazardous processes.
