In continuation to what we reported earlier (please refer to e-mails in trail), the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified the Battery Waste Management (Second Amendment) Rules, 2024 (“Amendment”) with immediate effect to further amend the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 (“Rules”).
The Amendment Rule has revised the Table which specifies the obligation of producers (as defined under the Rules) with respect to the minimum use of domestically recycled materials in new Battery.
Prior to the Amendment, the Table specified the minimum use of the recycled materials out of total dry weight of a Battery (in percentage) in respect of financial year starting 2027-2028 for Portable and Electric Vehicle Battery and the financial year starting 2024-2025 for Industrial and Automotive Battery. With the present Amendment gaining effect, the requirement specified for the Financial Years 2024-25, 2025-26, 2026-27 and 2027-2028 for Automotive and Industrial Batteries is done away with.
