The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (“EPFO”) has introduced a facility for bulk generation of Universal Account Numbers (“UANs”) under specific exceptional circumstances. The move is with a view to streamline the accounting of Past Accumulations remitted by exempted Provident Fund Trusts, as well as to address cases arising from quasi-judicial and recovery proceedings.
Key Highlights:
- In special circumstances, including the surrender or cancellation of exemption by Provident Fund Trusts and remittances made pursuant to recovery proceedings, UANs may now be generated without requiring Aadhaar authentication;
- A dedicated software module has been developed and deployed, enabling Field Offices to bulk-generate UANs based on Member ID and other available member details, without Aadhaar linkage;
- The new facility is designed to ensure timely credit of remitted funds into members’ accounts and to facilitate proper accounting of Past Accumulations, even in the absence of Aadhaar linkage at the initial stage;
- All UANs generated under this facility, along with their associated Member IDs, will remain in a frozen status upon creation;
- Frozen UANs will be made operational only upon successful seeding of Aadhaar information with the respective UAN;
- Until the completion of Aadhaar seeding, no transfer or withdrawal transactions will be permitted from such frozen UANs.
