Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, toxins and Residues) First Amendment Regulations, 2024 notified; revises tolerance and contaminant limits for wheat, barley and coffee; enforces stricter rules on veterinary drugs in food products

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, toxins and Residues) First Amendment Regulations, 2024 (“Amendment Regulations”) to further amend the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011 (“Principal Regulations”). This amendment introduces new limits for specific contaminants in food products such as wheat, barley, rye, and coffee, effective from 1st April, 2025.

Key Highlights:

  • Wheat bran and coffee are newly classified under Ochratoxin A contamination, with a reduced permissible limit of 5 µg/kg;
  • Wheat bran and barley are added under Deoxynivalenol contamination, with limits set at 1000 µg/kg;
  • includes a revised list of antimicrobials and drugs prohibited for use at any stage in the production of meat, milk, and other products;
  • Revised tolerance limits for veterinary drugs used in various food products.
