The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2025 (“Amendment Regulations”) amending the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 (“Principal Regulations”). The Amendment Regulations revise some existing standards as well as introduce standards and specific requirements for a variety of food products, with provisions regarding ingredient standards, microbiological criteria and storage requirements for food safety. It will come into force on 1st February, 2026.
Key Highlights:
The standards for the following products have been revised:
- Oils & Emulsions: Standards have been amended with respect to the refractive index for different oils.
- Food Colours : The note under the table of general requirements stating, “It shall be free from mercury, copper and chromium in any form; aromatic amines, aromatic nitro compounds, aromatic hydrocarbons, and cyanides.” has been omitted.
- The standards for ‘synthetic food colour’ have been revised.
- Packaged Drinking Water (other than mineral water)
The standards for the following products have been added:
- Meat Sausages: Standards have been newly included for fresh and cooked meat sausages specifically with respect to their preparation & processing, composition and storage requirements.
- Dehydrated Tarragon: detailed standards have been included for dehydrated tarragon (whole and powder).
