FSSAI proposes to insert Table specifying residual level of Enzymes derived from Genetically Modified Microorganisms to be used in final food; suggestions invited till 25.02.2022

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed to insert a Table under Appendix C of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 (“Regulations”) for Enzymes derived from Genetically Modified Microorganisms.

FSSAI through the Draft Regulations published on 27th December, 2021 has invited objections and suggestions till 25th February, 2022. These can be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, FDA Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi- 110002 or sent on email at regulation@fssai.gov.in.

Background :

FSSAI through a Notification in October 2020 had inserted Appendix ‘C’ under the Regulations regarding the categories of Processing Aids and the residual level of each that is permitted in food. Under the Appendix C Table 11 prescribes the residual level for Enzymes (for treatment or processing of raw materials, foods, or ingredients) now with the proposed amendment another Table 11A is to be inserted relating to Enzymes derived from Genetically Modified Microorganisms.
