Health Ministry permits import of drugs through Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram airports

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (“MoHFW”) has notified the Drugs (Third Amendment) Rules, 2024. The changes in the final Notification are aligned with the draft amendment to the Drugs Rules shared earlier (please refer to e-mail in trail for further details). The MoHFW has now approved Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram airports for the importation of drugs into India.

Background:

Rule 43A of the Drugs Rules, 1945 prohibits import of drugs except through specific locations stipulated in the Rules. Earlier the approved places for air importation of drugs into India included Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Goa, Bengaluru and Visakhapatnam.
