Imported Hops pellets for use as ingredient to manufacture beer in India must conform to the copper limit (max. 1000 ppm) specified by European Food Safety Authority

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has clarified that Hops pellets imported to India, for use as an ingredient in manufacturing of Beer in India (and not for direct human consumption) are required to conform to the copper limits (max. 1000 ppm) specified by European Food Safety Authority (“EFSA”) as well as other FSSAI standards.

Background:

Trade and International Corporation of Division of FSSAI received representations where Hop pellets imported into India meant for use as an ingredient in the manufacturing of Beer in India and not for direct human consumption, are tested for copper as per limits prescribed under “food not specified” category as per FSS (Contaminants, Toxins & Residue)  Regulations.
