Labour Ministry extends the provisions of the ESI Act to shops, restaurants etc. where 10 or more persons are employed or were employed on any day of the preceding 12 months in all areas of Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has extended the provisions of the Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948 (“ESI Act, 1948”) to certain classes of establishments where ten or more persons are employed or were employed on any day of the preceding twelve months in all areas under the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands with immediate effect.

The provisions of the ESI Act, 1948 have been extended to the following classes of establishments in all areas where the Act has already been brought in force;

1. Shops;
2. Hotels;
3. Restaurants;
4. Road motor transport establishments;
5. Cinemas including preview theatres;
6. Newspaper establishments;
7. Educational institutions; and
8. Medical institutions, nursing homes, diagnostic centers, pathological labs.
