Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules amended making vegetarian and non-vegetarian origin marking optional for certain products

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has amended the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 (“Principal Rules”) by publishing the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Fourth Amendment Rules, 2026 (“Amended Rules”) in the Official Gazette. The Amendment is effective from 21^st September 2026.

As per earlier provisions, it was mandatory for every package containing soap, shampoos, toothpastes, cosmetics and toiletries to display a red or brown dot for products of non-vegetarian origin and a green dot for products of vegetarian origin at the top of its principal display panel. But now such requirement has been made optional for the manufacturer or packer or importer of the abovementioned products.
