MeitY withdraws earlier Press Release on sharing of Aadhaar details with organizations in view of misinterpretation possibilities; advises UIDAI Aadhaar card holders to exercise normal prudence while using and sharing Aadhaar number

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Ministry”) has informed that the Press Release issued by the Bengaluru Regional Office, UIDAI has been withdrawn in view of the possibility of misinterpretation of the Press Release. The same has been withdrawn since 29th May, 2022.
Further, the Ministry has advised the UIDAI Aadhaar card holders to exercise normal prudence in using and sharing their UIDAI Aadhaar numbers.
Note- Aadhaar Identity Authentication ecosystem has provided adequate features for protecting and safeguarding the identity and privacy of the Aadhaar holder.
Background-
The Ministry, Bengaluru Regional Office, UIDAI issued a Press Release wherein it cautioned the citizens to not share photocopy of the Aadhaar with organizations as it could be misused. Alternatively, the Ministry suggested the use of Masked Aadhaar which displays only the four digits of the Aadhaar number.
