Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations amended; paper and board materials /glass containers / metal and metal alloys allowed for packaging of mineral water and drinking water

Further to Update reported earlier in the e-mail in trail, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) First Amendment Regulations, 2022 (described in the trail) to amend the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018 (“Principal Regulation”).

The transparency of a container shall not be less than 85 percent in light transmittance: Provided also that all pigments or colorants as specified in Indian Standard IS: 9833 may be allowed in plastic containers of five litre and above made of Polycarbonate and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) used for packaging of mineral water and packaged drinking water. The transparency of such containers shall not be less than 85 percent in light transmittance. |

Food grade packaging materials such as paper and board materials / glass containers / metal and metal alloys which may or may not contain plastic as component compatible with the water may be used in the packaging of mineral water and packaged drinking water. In this case, requisites of transparent bottle will not apply.
Earlier, for packaging of mineral water and packaged drinking water, only plastic containers made of Polycarbonate and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) were used. With this amendment, FSSAI has allowed the usage of paper and board materials / glass containers / metal and metal alloys for packaging drinking water and mineral water.
