Public comments invited on draft FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2024; proposes use of Natamycin as additive in fermented milk and dairy based desserts

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has issued the draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2024 (“Draft Amendment”) and invited objections and suggestions on the same till 22nd October, 2024. Objections or suggestions may be addressed to Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, FDA Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi- 110002 or sent on email at regulation@fssai.gov.in

The Draft Amendment proposes to add Natamycin as a food additive in ‘Fermented milks (plain) not heat treated after fermentation’ (chakka) upto a maximum recommended level of 5mg / kg. It further proposes to add Natamycin as a food additive in dairy based desserts (shrikhand) with a maximum recommended level of 5mg / kg.
