Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a notification dated 23rd October 2019 directing the date of implementation of labelling of Indian Brandy as “Indian Brandy (Made from Molasses spirit)”. The time period for use of unused old label and printed cans for the same has been extended up to 31st March 2020.
Background:
FSSAI had earlier issued a notification on 29th March 2019, where a time period of 6 months was provided for use of unused old label and printed cans for Indian Brandy. Representations were received by FSSAI, considering the said notification w.r.t. labelling of Indian Brandy as “Indian Brandy (Made from Molasses spirit)”, because Brandy is widely made from sources other than Molasses. Representations were also received, stating that stakeholders have registered the brand with Excise for a period of 12 months i.e., up to 31st March 2020, post payment of huge amount as registration fee. Modifying the labels will lead to a huge cost implication and therefore extra time is sought for.
