The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has, in a notice dated 25th November,2019, directed the Commissioners of Food Safety of all States / Union Territories to undertake regular surveillance and enforcement activities to prevent mixing of harmful substances ( Grass, Stone powder, Jaggery residue etc.) in “Cumin” by Food Business Operators (“FBO”).
Background:
The FSSAI had received reports that many FBOs were engaged in the manufacture and sale of cumin with unauthorised addition of harmful substances.
The Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulation, 2011 clearly states that the Product (“Cumin”) shall be free from added colour and harmful substances and if the food samples are found to be non-conforming, such Food Business Operators shall be subjected to penal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
In light of the above, the FSSAI has issued this notification.
