FSSAI amends Food Products Standards and Food Additives Regulations; inserts products and prescribes standards for fruits / vegetables / cereals / salt / spices; FBOs must comply by 1st July, 2021

In a Gazette Notification dated 5th August, 2020 the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has rolled out the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Third Amendment Regulations, 2020 (“New Regulations”), to further amend the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 (“Regulation”). The New Regulations have gained effect since 5th August, 2020 (the date of their publication in the Official Gazette).

Food Business Operators have been directed to ensure compliance with the provisions of the New Regulations by 1st July, 2021.

The following food products are being added under the specific provisions of the Regulation, as mentioned below:

• Under the Regulation 2.3 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, relating to “Fruit and Vegetable Products” the following products along with their standards are being added –

1. Almond Kernels;
2. Coconut Milk Power;

• Under Regulation 2.4 which relates to “Cereals and Cereal Products”, the following products with respective standards are being inserted in the New Regulation –

1. Rice;
2. Chia Seeds;
3. Cassava or Tapioca product (Gari);
4. Edible Cassava or Tapioca Flour;
5. Roasted Bengal Gram Flour ( Chana Sattu);
6. Ragi Flour

• Under Regulation 2.9 relating to “Salt, Spices, Condiments and Related Products”, the following products along with their standards are being added –

1. Mixed Masala Powder;
2. Spice Oleoresins;
3. Tejpat;
4. Star Anise
