Ministry of Consumer Affairs invites comments on unit measurement for food wrapping paper and Aluminum foils till 23.09.2024

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (“Ministry”) has invited public comments regarding the unit of measurement for the sale of ‘food wrapping paper and Aluminium foils’ used for carrying food products. This proposal is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that consumers receive accurate and adequate information about the quantity of commodities in packaged goods. Currently, these products are sold in units of either “kg” or “metre”.

Public comments/suggestions can be submitted online by 23rd September 2024.

Key Considerations:

  1. Declaration of Quantity: The Ministry is considering requiring that both the weight (in kg) and the dimensions (length × breadth in metre × metre or cm × cm) be declared on the packaging of products like aluminium foil and food wrapping paper. This change aims to provide consumers with clear and comprehensive information about the actual quantity of the product they are purchasing.
  2. Importance of Dual Measurement: Ensuring that both weight and dimensions are listed on the label will give consumers a more accurate understanding of the quantity delivered, helping them make informed purchasing decisions.

Stakeholders are invited to provide comments on whether the net quantity of ‘food wrapping paper and Aluminium foils’ should be declared using both weight and dimensions to better inform consumers. The comments/feedback/suggestions may be provided in any of the following modes:

  1. Through email: Comments may be sent via email to any of the following email addresses:
    • dirwm-ca@nic.in
    • ashutosh.agarwal13@nic.in
    • mk.naik72@gov.in
  2. By post: Alternatively, written comments can be sent to, the Director (Legal Metrology), Department of Consumer Affairs, Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi-01
