FSSAI amends packaging regulations to permit recycled PET use in food packaging for packing, storing, carrying or dispensing food products

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (‘FSSAI’) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) First Amendment Regulations, 2025 (‘Amendment Regulations’) to introduce provisions for the regulated use of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (‘PET’). This amendment is effective immediately.

The Amendment Regulations permits Food Business Operators (‘FBOs’) to package, store, carry or dispense food products using materials made from recycled PET, provided such materials conform to standards and guidelines to be separately notified by the Food Authority. Further, all recycled PET packaging materials must continue to comply with national packaging regulations and applicable quality standards governing such materials.
