Food Safety and Standards Authority of India in an order dated 8th November, 2018 decided that, declaring the expiry date on edible grade crude oil could be done voluntarily, but declaration of the manufacturing date will be mandatory for domestic and imported edible grade crude oil. This needs to be done as a precautionary measure to ensure safety among consumers as crude oil could be stored for an indefinite time but there is a high possibility of secondary oxidation and contamination which makes it unfit for human consumption.
