The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has proposed Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, toxins and Residues) Amendment Regulations (“Draft Amendment”), 2018 through a notification dated 26th November,2018.
The FSSAI invites objections and suggestions on the Draft Amendment, which are to be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, FDA Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi- 110002 or sent on email at regulation@fssai.gov.in within 26th December,2018.
Key Highlights:
Through the Draft Amendment, the FSSAI proposes to make amendments in the Regulation 2.1 relating to “METAL CONTAMINANTS”, under the table 2.1.1.
The table states the name of the metal contaminants and the quantity of that metal that should not be exceeded in various articles of food.
The metals mentioned in the table are:
- Lead
- Copper
- Arsenic
- Tin
- Cadmium
- Mercury
- Methyl Mercury (Calculated as the element)
- Chromium
- Nickel
- Selenium
- Antimony
The metal Zinc has been removed from the table, while metals like Selenium and Antimony have been added.
Along with 2.1, Regulation 2.2 which deals with Crop contaminants and naturally occurring toxic substances has also been amended.
