Andaman and Nicobar administration enforces complete ban on sale/purchase of filament lamps; effective from 3rd February, 2020

The Hon’ble Lt. Governor (Administrator), Andaman and Nicobar Islands, through a notification dated 4th November, 2019 in the Andaman and Nicobar Gazette, has enforced a complete ban on sale/purchase of filament lamps for the protection of environment. The ban is set to come into effect from 3rd February, 2020.

The sale/purchase of filament lamps have been banned irrespective of their make, model, wattage and nature. Violation of any of these directions will entail punishment under relevant provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.

Background:

  • The draft notification of this direction was published on 16th August, 2019 for inviting suggestions/objections and a meeting with stakeholders was held on 24th August, 2019.
  • It had been found that inefficient filament lamps are still in circulation in the market, even after implementation of various energy efficiency projects in which LED lights were provided at very nominal rates to overcome the barrier of high costs of LED lights.
  • This step was taken with a view to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released from power plants by using energy efficient LED lights.
