In a Gazette Notification dated 23rd September, 2020 the Ministry of Road Transport And Highways (“Ministry”) has rolled out the Central Motor Vehicles (Ninth Amendment) Rules, 2020 (“Amendment”) in order to further amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 (“Principal Rules”).
The Amendment has gained effect on 23rd September, 2020.
With the present Amendment, a new provision, Rule 115I has been inserted which deals with the “Requirements for the motor vehicles running on compressed gaseous hydrogen fuel cell”.
The amendment mandates that the *Category M and **Category N motor vehicles, running on compressed gaseous hydrogen fuel cell must be in accordance with AIS 157:2020, as amended from time to time, till the corresponding BIS specification is notified under the Bureau of Indian Standard Act, 2016.
Further, the hydrogen fuel specification for fuel cell vehicles must be in accordance with ISO 14687 till the corresponding BIS specification is notified under the Bureau of Indian Standard Act, 2016.

As per the Principal Rules:
*Category M Vehicle- means a motor vehicle with at least four wheels used for the carriage of passengers and their luggage
**Category N- means a motor vehicle with at least four wheels used for the carriage of goods
