Enhanced fines for violations under Collection of Statistics Act, 2008 effective 10th December, 2024: Centre confirms implementation date for amendments under Jan Vishwas Act

Pursuant to the Update reported earlier on Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act 2023 (please refer to e-mails in trail for details), the Ministry of Statistics has appointed 10th December, 2024 as the date on which the amendments pertaining to the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008 (“Act”) will gain effect. The Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2023 is with a view to implement updated/ enhanced monetary fines while doing away with the criminal sanctions associated with non-compliance of provisions under the Act.

Key Highlights:

  1. The penalty for failing to produce books of account, vouchers, documents or other business records, or for neglecting or refusing to provide required particulars in information schedules, returns or inquiries, stands enhanced to Rs. 1 Lakh from the erstwhile penalty amount of Rs. 5000/- (five thousand rupees).
  2. Subsequent convictions for this or any other contravention under this Act or Rules or any other requirement imposed under the Act could lead to penalties extending to Rs. 5,000/- (five thousand rupees) per day for which the contravention continues.
