Food Safety and Standards Authority of India issues Draft Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Amendment Regulations, 2018

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) on its website n 23rd March 2016 has issued a notice on the Draft Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Amendment Regulations, 2018 (“Draft Amendment Regulations”) inviting suggestions, views, and comments from the stakeholders on or before 23rd May 2018 to amend the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011(“Principal Regulation”). The suggestions, views and comments can be sent through post and addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, FSSAI at 03rd Floor, Food and Drug Administration Bhawan, Kotla road, New Delhi – 110002 or through email at regulation@fssai.gov.in.

FSSAI has also issued the format (attached for your reference) in which the suggestions, views and comments are required to be sent to the above-mentioned address or email.

The key highlights of the Draft Amendment Regulations are:

  1. The size of font for label declarations on packages to be made under Regulation 2.4.2 and 2.4.4 of the Principal Regulation have been suggested to be 3mm. This is not applicable to the declarations pertaining to instructions for use or preparation of the product.
  1. Amendment suggested with respect to label declaration for packages containing an admixture of edible oils.
  1. The font size of the label declarations on the packages of blended edible vegetable oil has been suggested to be not less than 5 mm. The words “NOT TO BE SOLD LOSE” have also been suggested to be declared on such packages.
