The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) on 13th May 2019, has issued an Order allowing Food Business Operators (“FBOs”) to use the term “Whole Wheat Flour (Atta)” on packaging material of food products, till 31st December 2019.
It has been further clarified by FSSAI that, any further extension in this regard will be considered on case to case basis.
Background:
On 1st February 2019, an Order was issued by FSSAI stating that all FBOs were to mention “Whole Wheat Flour (Atta)” on packaging labels, wherever the same is being used as a single ingredient in food items.
Again, on 30th April 2019, FSSAI issued another Order replacing the above nomenclature. As per this Order, FBOs were required to use the term “Whole Flour (Atta)” instead of the term “Whole Wheat Flour (Atta)” on their packaging material of food products.
This transition led to FBOs making representations to FSSAI. Hence the extension of the timeline.
