Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises rolls out Electrical Equipment (Quality Control) Order, 2020; effective from 11th November 2021

The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in an Order dated 11th November 2020 has issued the Electrical Equipment (Quality Control) Order, 2020 (“Order”).

Key Highlights –

• Conformity to standards and essential requirements– Every Electrical Equipment as specified in the Schedule to this Order (“Scheduled Goods and Articles”), shall conform to the corresponding Indian standards under the Schedule which shall gain effect from 11th November 2021.

• Compulsory certification, marking and labelling- Every Scheduled Goods and Articles shall bear the Standard Mark under a licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

• Certification and enforcement authority- The Bureau of Indian Standards (“BIS”) shall be the certifying and enforcing authority in respect of the Electrical Equipment, further whenever required, an officer not below the rank of an Under Secretary to the Government of India or District Industries Centre shall assist the Bureau in enforcement of this order.

• Penalty for contravention- Any person who contravenes any of the provisions of this order shall be punishable under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016
