The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (“Ministry”) has issued a Press Release to declare all lanes in the fee plazas on National Highways (“NH”) as “FASTag lane of the fee plaza” with effect since midnight of 15th/16th February 2021. This is done with a view to further promote fee payment through digital mode, reduce waiting time and fuel consumption, and provide for a seamless passage through fee plazas.
The Ministry further emphasised that, in accordance with the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, any vehicle not fitted with FASTag or vehicle without valid, functional FASTag entering into the FASTag lane of the fee plaza will be required to pay a fee equivalent to two times of the fee applicable to that category.
Earlier, the Ministry mandated the fitment of FASTag in motor vehicles with at least four wheels for carrying passengers and motor vehicle with at least four wheels used for carrying goods and persons, since 1st January 2021.
