With a view to facilitate ease of doing trade, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”), has in a recent Notification dated 22nd May, 2018, decided to allow food importers to carry out certain rectifications in case of labelling deficiencies.
Key Highlights of the Notification:
- A special dispensation for rectification has been provided under the Food Safety and Standards (Import) Regulations, 2017.
- In addition to that, FSSAI is now allowing food importers to rectify certain additional labelling deficiencies.
- The same can be rectified at customs bonded warehouses before visual inspection or re-inspection by the Authorised Officer or his representative.
It can be done by affixing a single non-detachable sticker or by any other non-detachable method next to the principal display panel without altering or marking the original label information in any manner.
The notification has laid down the detailed process for carrying out the rectification in the following circumstances:
- Name and complete address of the manufacturer and/or packer
- Lot/ Code/ Batch Identification
- Date of manufacturing/ packing
- Declaration regarding food additives
