The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has directed Food Business Operators (“FBOs”) to indicate / specify the exact ingredients on label / accompanying document in case of Retail / Nonretail containers. For example, when specifying the nutrient name, such as ‘Iron’, FBOs are required to indicate the salt added, i.e., Ferric pyrophosphateor Sodium Iron (III) Ethylene diamine tetra Acetate Trihydrate (Sodium feredetate – Na Fe EDTA) in accordance with the provisions outlined in the FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 and FSS (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018.
Background:
It has come to the attention of FSSAI that when Food Business Operators (“FBOs”) label ingredients for fortified food products, both in retail and non-retail containers, they often only specify the nutrient name, such as “Iron,” without indicating the salt added. Absence of this information in the ingredient list is posing challenges at the field level, including issues related to surveillance, implementation, and enforcement activities. In this regard, it has been directed that Food Business Operators (“FBOs”) specify the exact ingredient in the list of ingredients on label / accompanying document in case of Retail / Non retail containers, as the case may be, in accordance with the provisions outlined in the FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 and FSS (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018.
