The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) in a Notification dated 16th June, 2020 has extended the timeline for compliance of the provisions mentioned in the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on sales) Second Amendment Regulations, 2019 (“Amendment Regulations”), which imposes restrictions on sale of common salt. The timeline for compliance has been extended up to 1st January, 2021.
Background:
In a Notification in the Gazette of India dated 27th June, 2019 (“Notification 1”), the FSSAI introduced the Amendment Regulations which imposed restrictions on “sale or offer or expose for sale or have in the premises for the purpose of sale, common salt for direct human consumption or for use as an ingredient in a food product unless the same is iodized”. Notification 1 brought this restriction into place from 27th June, 2019.
However, in a Notification dated 22nd August, 2019 (“Notification 2”), the FSSAI stated that the Amendment Regulations imposing the restrictions can be complied with by 1st July, 2020.
Now, in light of the COVID-19 crisis, FSSAI has come up with a latest Notification extending the timeline for compliance to the Amendment Regulations till 1st January, 2021.
