Government of Karnataka re-fixes rates for RT-PCR testing and Rapid Antigen Testing to be charged by private labs; fallout of Task Force Committee’s reconsideration

The Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka (“State Government”), in an Order dated 24th July, 2020, has re-fixed the rates of RT-PCR testing and Rapid Antigen Testing by private laboratories in the State.

The rates fixed are as follows:

1. Rate of RT-PCR testing for the samples sent by Government to private laboratories, including screening test and confirmatory test is set at Rs. 2000/- per test (inclusive of the cost of PPE kit).

2. Ceiling rate for private samples in private laboratories, including screening test and confirmatory test, is set at Rs. 3000/- per test (inclusive of the cost of PPE kit).

3. Rate of Rapid Antigen Test for private samples in private laboratories is set at Rs. 700/- per sample (inclusive of PPE kit).

It has been further stated that testing can be done only in the ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research) approved laboratories.

Background:

The State Government, in a Circular dated 31st March, 2020, had capped the total cost of COVID-19 testing per patient at Rs. 4500/-. Further, in a Circular dated 17th April, 2020, the State Government had fixed the cost per test (for COVID-19) at Rs. 2250/-
