Government of Kerala issues addendum to Sample Testing, Collection and Transport Guidelines for Laboratory Diagnosis on COVID-19; swab collection can now be performed by Lab Technicians and Staff Nurses

Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Kerala on 12th August, 2020 has issued addendum to Sample Testing, Collection and Transport Guidelines for Laboratory Diagnosis on COVID-19.

The addendum is issued in view of rising COVID-19 infection in the State and to facilitate enhancement of testing.

  1. The nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swab collection can be performed by trained health care providers like Laboratory Technicians and Staff Nurses.
  2. The Lab-in-Charge or the Doctor in the swab collection team shall ensure that the Laboratory Technician or the Staff Nurse intending to collect the swab is trained by a Doctor. The Lab-in-Charge or the Doctor in the swab collection team will supervise the first 20 swab collection procedures done by the Laboratory Technician or the Staff Nurse and shall monitor the procedure daily.
