Karnataka Government withdraws earlier notification granting extension of work hours in “essential factories” in the State

The Karnataka Government has, in a recent Notification dated June 11, 2020, withdrawn its earlier direction issued on May 22, 2020.

The earlier notification had exempted all factories in the State from the provisions of Section 51 (weekly hours) and Section 54 (daily hours) of the Factories Act, 1948 (Act), extending working hours for adult workers to 10 hours a day and 60 hours a week till August 21, 2020.

Now, with the withdrawal of the previous notification, the exemption stands revoked with immediate effect and factories must comply with Section 51 and Section 54 of the Act and ensure daily hours of work does not exceed 9 hours and weekly hours of work does not exceed 48 hours.
