BIS license/ application for BIS license declared as a pre-condition for issue of FSSAI licence to manufacturers of packaged drinking water and mineral water; effective from 1st April, 2021

With a view to ensure that the manufacturers of Packaged Drinking Water (“PDW”) and Mineral Water (“MW”) obtain BIS Certification*, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has made BIS license / application for BIS license a pre-condition for the purpose of issue of FSSAI license.

 

Procedure for consideration of application for issuance of FSSAI license to manufacturers of PDW and MW is as follows-

  • FBOS required to upload copy of the BIS license / copy of letter indicating recording of application of BIS license at the time of making an application for new license for PDW and MW from FSSAI on the online system of FoSCoS;
  • Post obtaining of BIS license, the Food Business operators (“FBOs”), will be required to furnish the details in online Annual Return available on FoSCoS;
  • BIS license to be a mandatory document while applying for renewal of license;
  • In the event of closure of rejection of application for license by BIS, the FBOs will be required to inform the concerned licensing authority. The FSSAI application / license is liable to be rejected / suspended / cancelled.

 

The provisions of the Order has gained effect on 1st April 2021.

(17) No person shall manufacture, sell or exhibit for sale packaged drinking water except under the Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Mark.
