FSSAI amends the FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011; Shea Butter & Borneo tallow/ Illipe butter gets added under the category of Edible Fats

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has by a Gazette Notification dated 19th March, 2021 issued the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Second Amendment Regulations, 2021, effective since March 19, 2021.

The amendments are in furtherance to the draft that was issued on 30th July, 2020 (detailed in trail). As per the amendment, two new clauses under the category of Edible Fats have been added pertaining to Shea Butter and Borneo tallow/ Illipe butter. Additionally, for both new categories of edible oils added, the present amendment also specifies that food additive as per Appendix A of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 is permitted.
